Tokhtamysh was not yet the undisputed khan when this piece was struck at Sygnaq — he had seized control of the White Horde only shortly before, backed by Timur, and was still consolidating power across the eastern steppe. Sygnaq, on the Syr Darya, had long been a key administrative center for the White Horde's northern territories, and its mint activity under Tokhtamysh documents the moment his authority crystallized in the region before his eventual takeover of the entire Golden Horde following Mamai's defeat at Kulikovo in 1380.
