Additional information

Tokhtamysh reunified the fractured Golden Horde in the early 1380s after years of civil war, and the simultaneous operation of mints at Sygnaq and Gulistan reflects both his expansionist consolidation and the logistical reality of administering a territory stretching from Crimea to the Kazakh steppe. Coins struck under his name at multiple mints in the same year are not uncommon, but pieces citing both Sygnaq and Gulistan on a single flan are considerably scarcer — the result of dies either prepared in error or during a transitional administrative reassignment.

Within three years of this issue, Tokhtamysh would invade Muscovy and sack Moscow. His war with Timur shortly after would prove catastrophic for the Horde's minting infrastructure entirely.
