Tochtamysh briefly reunified the fractured Golden Horde in the early 1380s after decades of internal strife — the so-called "Great Troubles" — and his coinage from Qrim al-Jadida (New Crimea) reflects that consolidation drive. Mints across the western steppe were brought back under central authority, and the Crimean issues are among the more consistently produced of his early reign.
By 1395 Timur's devastating campaign on the Terek River effectively ended Tochtamysh's power, making his pre-1395 silver the output of a functioning state — however briefly.
