Additional information

Al-Qahir came to power in 929 after his brother al-Muqtadir was briefly deposed and then restored — then deposed again, this time fatally, with al-Qahir's direct involvement in the killing. His reign lasted only until 934, when he was himself overthrown, blinded by his own court, and left to beg in the streets of Baghdad. The epithet "al-Qahir," meaning the Vanquisher or Avenger, proved bitterly ironic.

Abbasid dirhams of this period were struck across a fragmented network of mints as real caliphal authority had long since contracted to a ceremonial shell under Buyid and other regional pressures.
