| Obverse description | The obverse field is entirely occupied by multiple lines of bold Mamluk thuluth-style Arabic calligraphy, struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of hammered Mamluk silver coinage. The inscription, arranged in three horizontal registers, bears the name and titles of the reigning sultan al-Nasir Hasan, son of al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun. The lettering is deeply impressed and displays the characteristic angular yet fluid character of mid-fourteenth-century Mamluk epigraphy. No border or decorative framing element is present, the legend filling the entire available field to the edges of the flan. |
