| Obverse description | Central field displays the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) arranged in three or four horizontal lines of Kufic script within a plain inner circle. A circular marginal legend in Kufic script surrounds the central inscription, typically citing a Quranic verse (Quran 9:33). The overall composition is characteristic of standard Abbasid caliphal coinage, with no figural imagery, relying entirely on epigraphic decoration. The legends are struck on a broad, thin, irregularly shaped flan typical of hammered Islamic silver dirhams of this period. |
