Obverse description Youthful male head of Apollo Karneios facing left, rendered in fine relief with curling hair and a ram's horn emerging above the ear, a characteristic attribute of the Karnean Apollo worshipped at Metapontion. The facial features are delicately modeled in the late classical style, with a softly defined jaw and naturalistic profile. The flan is irregular, with a portion of the rim missing, characteristic of the small hammered coinage of Magna Graecia.
