Above the altar, a bust emerges from a crescent, representing the royal or divine effigy in the Sasanian tradition. Pahlavi inscriptions appear on the altar plinth and in the fields, recording the king's name and titles. The composition is rendered in bold relief typical of Sasanian gold coinage, all within an irregular beaded border. |

Shapur III ruled for just five years before being killed by his own nobles — crushed under a tent, according to the sources — making his coinage among the briefer Sasanian series. His reign is notable diplomatically for the 387 AD partition of Armenia with Rome, a settlement that held for decades and removed one of the empire's most persistent frontier headaches.
