| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Shapur III in high relief, wearing an elaborate mural crown adorned with a korymbos (hair bundle) and dentilated diadem, with flowing ribbon ties visible behind. The king wears a beaded necklace and shoulder armor, with a prominent moustache rendered in fine detail. A large grape-cluster earring or pendant ornament hangs behind the royal portrait. A Pahlavi legend in the right field identifies the king, all within a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
Shapur III ruled for just five years before being killed by his own nobles — crushed under a tent, according to the sources — making his coinage among the briefer Sasanian series. His reign is notable diplomatically for the 387 AD partition of Armenia with Rome, a settlement that held for decades and removed one of the empire's most persistent frontier headaches.
