| Reverse description | The six-winged figure of Cronos-El striding to the left, a syncretistic deity combining Greek Kronos with the Phoenician El, rendered in the local Byblian iconographic tradition. The figure holds an Egyptian was-scepter in the right hand, reflecting the strong Egyptian cultural influence prevalent at the Phoenician coastal mints. A crescent enclosing a central globule is positioned above the deity's head. The Greek royal legend ΒΑCΙΛΕWC TPYΦΩNOC is distributed in the field, reading 'King Tryphon.' The type corresponds to Module B or C as classified in the Seleucid Coins catalogue. |

Tryphon — born Diodotos — seized the Seleucid throne as regent for the boy-king Antiochus VI, then had the child murdered around 142 BC and declared himself king outright. His reign lasted barely four years before Antiochus VII Sidetes cornered him at Apamea, where he died, likely by suicide, in 138 BC. Coins struck in his name at Byblus are genuinely scarce; the mint's output for this usurper was limited, and SC 2044 sees relatively few examples surface at auction.
