Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the quartered arms of Lucerne — displaying the city's characteristic divided shield with diagonal hatching on the dexter half and the bend sinister on the sinister half — occupy the central field. An eagle displayed surmounts the shield as a crest. The circular Latin legend MONETA ∗ NO ∗ LVCERNENS surrounds the inner circle, with the letters L V placed in the field, referencing the mint city of Lucerne. The coin is struck on a square klippe flan with characteristic irregular edges typical of hammered production.
