Pantaleon is one of only two Baktrian kings — the other being Agathokles — known to have struck coins in nickel, a feat that would not be replicated anywhere in the Western world until the 19th century. The alloy used was not refined nickel but a naturally occurring copper-nickel ore, likely sourced from mines in the region around modern Afghanistan. Whether this was a deliberate metallurgical choice or an artifact of available ore deposits remains debated.
His reign is poorly documented in literary sources, and much of what is known about Pantaleon comes from the coins themselves.
