Zwentibold was the illegitimate son of Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia, granted the kingdom of Lotharingia in 895 in what amounted to a political experiment — keeping a restless heir occupied with a difficult territory rather than allowing him to threaten the Carolingian succession proper. His reign lasted barely five years before his own nobles turned against him; he was killed in battle against them in August 900, making his coinage among the most time-compressed of any Carolingian-era king.
The Trier mint had operated under ecclesiastical authority for generations, and its output under Zwentibold reflects that administrative continuity even as political control above it remained contested.
