William I held the see of Châlons from 1113 until his death in 1122, a period when episcopal coinage in Champagne was firmly established but frequently contested by secular lords encroaching on minting rights. The Bishopric of Châlons had held coinage privileges since the Carolingian period, and these billon deniers represent one of the more obscure corners of French feudal numismatics — documented in Poey d'Avant but rarely appearing in trade.
