Vratislaus II ruled Bohemia as duke before being elevated to king by Emperor Henry IV in 1085 — a reward for military support during the Investiture Controversy, specifically for siding with the emperor against Pope Gregory VII. The royal title was personal and non-hereditary, which meant Bohemia reverted to a duchy on his death in 1092.
