Sergius III reclaimed the papacy in 904 by ousting his rival Christopher, who had himself deposed Leo V — making this coin a product of one of the more violent successions in early medieval Rome. The joint issue with Louis III of Provence reflects a fleeting political alliance: Louis had been crowned emperor by the pope that same year, a dignity stripped from him within months when Berengar I captured and blinded him at Verona in 905, ending his imperial pretensions permanently.
The collaboration between these two figures lasted barely a year before Louis's political collapse.
