Obverse description Hammered silver denier of irregular round flan. The central device features a cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four quadrants each containing a pellet or small ornament. A circular legend in Latin capital letters surrounds the inner beaded border, reading + RODVLFVS RX, identifying the issuer as King Rudolf. The outer border is formed by a ring of beads or dashes following the coin's irregular edge. The overall style is characteristic of Carolingian-derived Italian regal coinage of the early tenth century, with bold, slightly irregular letter forms typical of the Pavia mint.
