| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized cross pattée with a lozenged centre, flanked by pellets or small ornamental elements in each angle, all executed in the rough, high-relief hammered style characteristic of early Carolingian coinage. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads GRΛTIΛ DI REX, identifying Ralph as king by the grace of God, rendered in angular Carolingian majuscule letters preceded by a cross pommée. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hand-struck silver deniers of the period. |
