Obverse description Central field occupied by the Odonic royal monogram, composed of interlaced letters forming the name of King Ralph (Raoul), struck in low relief in the Carolingian tradition. The monogram is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, itself surrounded by the circular legend in the outer field. The lettering, executed in capitals with angular uncial forms characteristic of early medieval Frankish coinage, reads clockwise from a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hand-hammered silver deniers of the West Frankish kingdom.
