| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by the Carolingian KRLS monogram, a ligature combining the letters of KAROLUS in the tradition inherited from Charlemagne, set within a plain inner circle. The monogram is rendered in a somewhat stylized, angular fashion characteristic of tenth-century Frankish hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner circle is a beaded border, beyond which the circular Latin legend reads: +GRATIA D-I REX, proclaiming Ralph as king by the grace of God. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as typical of hand-struck medieval deniers. |
