| Reverse description | A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The outer zone is filled with the mint legend arranged between wedge-shaped foliate or arrow-head ornaments, consistent with Carolingian denier coinage of the period. Ralph (Raoul) of Burgundy seized the West Frankish throne in 923 after the deposition of Charles the Simple, ruling a kingdom under near-constant pressure from Magyar raids and the growing autonomy of its magnates. The Châteaudun mint, operating under the County of Blois, issued coins in Ralph's name as an assertion of royal authority across a fragmented realm where local lords were increasingly striking currency on their own terms — with or without royal sanction. The multiple catalog citations here reflect how heavily studied this type has been relative to its actual survival rate.
