Obverse description Central field occupied by a Carolingian KRLS royal monogram, composed of interlaced letters forming the name of King Ralph (Raoul), struck in high relief within a beaded inner circle. The monogram displays the characteristic interlocking vertical and diagonal strokes of the Carolingian regal type. A circular legend surrounds the beaded border in Roman capital letters, reading clockwise from a cross pattee. The die work is typical of early tenth-century West Frankish hammered coinage, with somewhat irregular flan and bold lettering.
