Reverse description A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross is boldly struck in raised relief against a flat field, a standard Carolingian reverse type. The surrounding Latin legend CΛTΛLΛVNISI CVTS, partially rendered with lunate lambda forms in place of conventional A characters, identifies the mint city of Châlons-sur-Marne. The outer border of the flan is irregular, reflecting the hand-hammered striking technique typical of tenth-century West Frankish deniers.
