| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, a plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, its quadrants lightly decorated. Surrounding the beaded circle, a horizontal legend in debased Carolingian lettering reads RADVLFVS REX, identifying King Ralph (Raoul of Burgundy) as the issuing authority. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hammered billon production of the early tenth century. The legends and cross are boldly struck, though with some weakness at the periphery. |
