Obverse description Schematic bust of King Philippe I facing right, rendered in the crude Carolingian tradition typical of 11th-century French hammered coinage. The effigy is depicted in profile with stylized facial features and a diademed or filleted head, characteristic of the Capetian royal portrait type. The figure is shown in a highly abstracted manner with minimal detail, reflecting the die-cutting conventions of the Paris workshop. The surrounding circular legend reads PHILIPPVS REX, introduced by a cross pattee. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, with the design showing variable strike quality consistent with hand-hammered production.
