Obverse description Monogram of Philippe I rendered in stylised interlaced letterforms occupying the central field, struck in the characteristic Carolingian monogram tradition. The design is composed of the letters of the royal name arranged in a cruciform pattern, with individual letter strokes bold and deeply cut. A circular border of pellets or incuse impressions frames the central device. The circumferential Latin legend PHILIPPVS REX runs around the periphery, though partially weak due to the irregular flan and hammered production. The overall design reflects the transitional Capetian coinage style of the late eleventh century.
