Obverse description Central field depicts a stylized architectural motif representing a doorway or gateway, flanked by the letters NE to the left and EX to the right, with the letter O positioned above and the letters TR within the arch. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend reading PHLIPVS D-I DE REX surrounds the central motif, identifying the issuing authority as King Philip I. The lettering is rendered in the angular, somewhat crude Romanesque style typical of French feudal coinage of the late 11th century.
