Reverse description Central field displays a plain cross with small crosslets or crossbones at the terminations of each arm, a characteristic motif of Capetian royal deniers of this period. The cross divides the field into four quarters and is contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads AVRELIANIS CIVITAS, identifying the mint city of Orléans. The lettering is executed in the typical rough, hand-punched style consistent with hammered billon coinage of 11th- to early 12th-century France.
