Obverse description Central design features a stylized cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, with decorative elements in each quadrant of the cross. The legend PHILIPPVS REX runs around the periphery in Latin capitals, partially obscured by the irregular flan and die wear typical of hammered medieval coinage. The overall style is characteristic of late 11th-century Capetian royal deniers, with a crude but recognizable architectural or floral motif at the base of the cross.
