Obverse description Central cross pattee dividing the inner field into four quarters, each containing a single globule, forming the characteristic quatre globules design. The cross is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by a radiating annulet border. The peripheral legend reads PHILIPVS REX in Latin capital letters, introduced by a cross pommee. The overall design is executed in a simple, bold Romanesque style typical of French feudal coinage of the late 11th century.

Reverse description Stylized facing bust of a figure, likely a bishop or civic personification, depicted in a rudimentary Romanesque manner within a beaded inner circle. The bust is rendered in low relief with minimal detail, characteristic of hammered feudal deniers of the period. A radiating border surrounds the central medallion. The circumferential legend CAVILON CIVITAS, introduced by a cross, identifies the mint city of Chalon-sur-Saone in its Latinized form.
