| Obverse description | Central fourfold chrism cross (croix quadruplement chrismée) occupying the field, formed by a plain cross with crescents or wedge-shaped ornaments filling each angle, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The retrograde or irregular Latin legend PHILIPVS REX runs around the periphery, separated from the inner circle by the coin's characteristic hammered flan. The design reflects the Carolingian-derived coinage tradition of the early Capetian monarchy, with the chrism cross serving as a religious emblem of royal authority. |
