Obverse description Central field occupied by a floriated cross with splayed arms, each arm flanked by a pellet, forming a symmetrical cruciform design within a raised inner circle. The angles between the cross arms are filled with additional pellets or wedge-shaped ornaments, giving the field a densely decorated appearance typical of Capetian feudal coinage. A beaded or dentilated outer border frames the design. The circular legend surrounding the inner circle reads PIIIPVS RX, identifying Philip I as king, rendered in the angular, somewhat irregular Latin lettering characteristic of 11th-century hammered silver deniers.
