| Beschrijving keerzijde | Flat field bearing a bold monogram composed of the letters R and F conjoined, with a central pellet, all executed in a hammered Carolingian hand. The monogram abbreviates REX FRANCORUM (King of the Franks), the standard royal title employed on Carolingian regal coinage. A horizontal bar surmounts the composition, and a partial beaded border frames the periphery of the irregular silver flan. The design is entirely typographic, with no figurative imagery, consistent with the aniconic tradition of early Frankish deniers. The strike is somewhat off-centre, as is typical of hand-struck issues of this period. |
