Odo, Count of Paris, was elected king in 888 by the West Frankish magnates after Charles the Fat proved catastrophically unable to defend the realm against Viking siege — most immediately the prolonged assault on Paris in 885–886, which Odo himself had successfully commanded. His coronation was the first time a non-Carolingian had held the West Frankish throne, and his coinage reflects the political tension: the REX FR legend asserts royal legitimacy while the Toulouse mint attribution places this issue at the southwestern edge of a kingdom Odo never fully controlled. The Carolingian pretender Charles the Simple contested his rule from 893 onward.
