Obverse description Central field bears the royal monogram of Odo in Carolingian interlace style, formed by the interlocked letters of the king's name within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads ODO REX GRATIA D-I REX, proclaiming Odo as king by the grace of God, and is initiated by a cross pattee at the top of the coin. The entire design is enclosed within an outer beaded border, characteristic of late Carolingian hammered coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck production of the period.
