Reverse description Central device consists of a bold plain cross with equal arms extending nearly to the inner beaded circle, dividing the field into four quarters. Above the cross, a Carolingian-style arch or temple motif surmounts the upper arm, referencing the ecclesiastical authority of the Reims mint. The circumscribed legend REMIS CIVITAS, denoting the City of Reims, runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border, preceded by a cross. The flan is broad and irregular, typical of late 9th-century West Frankish hammered silver deniers.

Additional information

Odo, Count of Paris, was elected king in 888 by the western Frankish magnates after Charles the Fat's deposition — the first non-Carolingian to hold the throne. His coinage at Reims is particularly pointed evidence of his legitimacy bid: Reims was the coronation city, and striking there was a deliberate political act. The Reims mint output under Odo remains sparsely documented, and Type 2 pieces are meaningfully scarcer than his Paris issues.
