Obverse description Central field occupied by the royal monogram ODO, composed of the interlaced letters of the king's name and arranged in a triangular configuration. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which a circular Latin legend reading ODO GRACIA DEI REX runs around the periphery, invoking the king's divine mandate. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. The die work, while displaying the stylistic angularity typical of late ninth-century West Frankish minting, is boldly struck. A cross pattée precedes the legend.
