Odo (Eudes) was elected King of West Francia in 888 not by hereditary right but by desperate necessity — the Carolingian heir Charles the Fat had proven catastrophically unable to defend the realm against Viking incursions, and the Frankish magnates turned instead to the Count of Paris who had actually held the city against the siege of 885–886. His coinage, struck in his own name rather than a Carolingian emperor's, marks one of the earliest ruptures in the monetary fiction of unified Frankish imperial authority. The Curtisasonien mint — identified with Courchapon in Burgundy — was among the provincial workshops pressed into service during his contested reign.
