Additional information

Louis VI struck coins at Étampes under a royal prerogative he spent much of his reign defending by force. The Étampes mint was embedded in a region where castellan lords routinely issued competing coinages, and Louis's repeated military campaigns against figures like Thomas de Marle were as much about monetary control as territorial politics. This fifth type represents a late refinement of his Étampes coinage, issued by a king who died in 1137 having substantially consolidated Capetian authority over the Île-de-France — a consolidation that mint output at Étampes directly reflects.
