The cross divides the field into four quadrants and is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend STAMPIS CASTELLVM, identifying the Château d'Étampes as the issuing authority, is rendered in Latin majuscules between the beaded border and the outer toothed rim, consistent with the rough hand-struck fabric of 12th-century Capetian feudal deniers. |
