Reverse description Central field bears a plain pattee cross of bold, equal-armed form, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The quadrants formed by the cross arms are plain. The surrounding outer legend reads LVDOVICVS REX, identifying the issuing monarch as Louis, King. The outer border is decorated with a ring of alternating triangular wedge or lozenge-shaped pellets, forming a sawtooth pattern characteristic of Capetian royal deniers of the early twelfth century. The flan is irregular and the strike typical of hand-hammered medieval silver.
