The Greek letters alpha and omega are appended to the cross arms, referencing the Christian symbolism common on Capetian feudal issues. The surrounding annular legend reads DON CAS*TELLVN in irregular Latin majuscules, consistent with the mint attribution to Dreux, and the entire design is enclosed within an outer beaded border. The execution is characteristic of the rough, hand-engraved style of early twelfth-century hammered silver deniers. |
