Obverse description Central field features a stylised monogram composed of the letters of LVDOVICVS, rendered in a bold Carolingian-derived interlace style, enclosed within a plain inner circle with a beaded border. The monogram is flanked by annulets and a small star, typical of Capetian royal coinage iconography. The surrounding legend LVDOVICVS REX runs between the inner beaded circle and an outer border of alternating triangular pellet groups, characteristic of the hammered deniers of Château-Landon. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck medieval coinage of the early twelfth century.
