Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Louis I (the Pious) facing right, rendered in the late antique imperial tradition. The effigy displays a laurel wreath and drapery over the shoulder, with bold and slightly stylized Carolingian workmanship visible in the facial features. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait in the field, reading HLVDOVVICVS IMP AVG, proclaiming the emperor's title. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of ninth-century hammered silver coinage.
