Obverse description A plain Greek cross occupies the center of the coin, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The imperial legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP (Emperor Louis) is arranged in two registers around the periphery, reading both above and below the beaded circle in bold, somewhat irregular Carolingian capitals. The overall design is characteristic of the Carolingian monetary reform type, with the cross as the dominant symbol of Christian imperial authority. The coin exhibits the irregular flan shape typical of ninth-century hammered silver issues.
