Obverse description Central cross pattée enclosed within a beaded inner circle, from which radiates a series of short lines forming a stylised sunburst or wheel motif at the lower segment. The surrounding field bears the imperial legend in Latin capitals disposed around the outer beaded border. The overall composition is characteristic of the Carolingian temple-type denier adapted for the imperial period under Louis the Pious.
