The emperor's name and title appear in Roman capitals in the outer legend, reading HLVDOVVICVS IMP around the periphery. The lettering is boldly struck in the Carolingian manner, with characteristic angular forms typical of early ninth-century hammered silver coinage. The flan is irregularly shaped, as is common for hand-struck deniers of this period, with some weakness at the edges. |

| Mô tả mặt sau | The reverse bears the mint name VESONTIUM — the Latin toponym for Besançon — inscribed in two lines across the field in large, well-formed Roman capitals: VESON in the upper portion and TIVM in the lower, without an enclosing circle. A small cross precedes the legend on the left side. The flat, open field and bold lettering are characteristic of the Besançon mint output under Louis the Pious, reflecting the standardised Carolingian monetary reform coinage. The irregular flan exhibits typical edge irregularities consistent with hammered production. |
