Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms centered within a beaded inner circle, occupying the central field of the coin. Surrounding the inner circle, the imperial legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP is arranged in a continuous circular band, reading clockwise. The lettering is rendered in bold, incuse Roman capitals characteristic of early Carolingian monetary reform coinage. The overall design reflects the Temple type introduced under Charlemagne and continued by Louis the Pious.
