Obverse description Central field bears a stylized royal monogram composed of interlaced letters forming the name LOTHARII, executed in the crude, angular style characteristic of late Carolingian hammered coinage. The design is set within a plain inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend REX ✠ LOTHARII reading around the periphery, identifying the issuer as King Lothair. The die work is typical of tenth-century Frankish provincial minting, with irregular strike and flan resulting in partially visible legends.
