Lothair II — the last Carolingian to hold West Francia with any real authority — issued from Melun a mint that had been active since at least the ninth century, sitting on the Seine at a natural crossing point that made it commercially and strategically significant. His reign coincided with near-constant pressure from the Robertian nobility, particularly the Capetian Hugh the Great and then his son Hugh Capet, who controlled far more of the kingdom in practice than Lothair ever did.
Melun itself changed hands more than once during this period. Lothair retook it by force in 978.
